Apple, Android, Smart & Dumbphones - The Mobile Thread

I have the Samsung Galaxy S8+ and fck the idiots who complain about the placement of the fingerprint scanner. I have no problem fingering it while not touching the camera.

Speaking of Apple, how come they are not kicking out anything innovative nowadays? Is Steve Jobs taking a coffee break or something? Too soon? I actually miss him. That SOB kicked out some cool stuff. Tim Cooke kicked out the electric tooth brush earpods and got rid of the headphone jack.

I was watching an old Friends episode last night and saw the Nokia 3310. Those times when your mobile was on standby for days without charging.

Does anyone know if those wireless charging pads work if your mobile is in a leather case?

I'm taking a liking to having a "burner" phone as I see in the movies. What should I get? The new Nokia 3310 or...?

What's the point of a "burner" phone if you keep it on? Don't people triangulate your signal and find you?

Note 7 - It literally burns
I am getting ready to acquire the Note 8. I supposedly comes with a fire extinguisher.

you're not supposed to keep it on, you're supposed to turn it on with whatever disposable sim card you use, and then toss it. didn't you see the wire?

So why can't I use an old smartphone instead of a feature phone? I don't really fancy sending text messages again using a dial pad.

Anyone can find fwiffo by just going to his bar. Or putting in a conference call.

It's my first week using a full Android mobile. I feel like three or four people got together, cobbled some apps, and then called it a mobile phone because each area seems to have distinct behaviours and design.

I'm also still struggling to understand why finding a no frills file manager and music player that isn't pushing adverts (what happened to respect for my data plan?) or trying to create an inventory of my life in 'some' cloud is so challenging. My Twitter still doesn't work.

Why does every app need to record me and use the phone? Location services - do I really need it? I can just pick which city I want to book a table in. God knows how many permission denied I issued.

Is anyone going to buy the new iPhones?

It's so important for this one chap at work that he turned up his speakers on his computer to listen to the conference - much to my chagrin.

No interest. Face ID is the creepiest shit ever.

Windows uses it too. I'm fine it with it, but it isn't very convenient. You have to look at it from the right angle. I just use a pin code to log in now. I don't really have anything to hide anyways and not many people are in the position to physically access my phone/PC, so I don't care much about security for my personal devices anyways (professional is a different story of course). I wish they would've done more with AR, because that is where the future of smartphones lies.

I want to delete some photographs on my iPad - because I will be sharing it on my trip with someone and some photographs are best not shared given the subject.

The photographs were synced via iTunes to my iPad. I can delete every type of photograph except the 53 synced ones. I look up on Google, "Why can't I delete my photos on my ipad?" And it points me to an article that says something to the effect of because you used iTunes to sync your photographs, you have to go to your iTunes to remove them and sync with your iPad again. The problem you point out is not a problem - it's about understanding the concept of a sync.

Are you f#*$ing kidding me - it IS a bloody f#$*ing problem if I can't delete the pictures which this detached device is clearly capable of if it weren't for some asinine iOS rule.

Just got my new MOTO 5 phone. Its good -great camera 13 Mega Pixels.
It has thumbprint lock - which I thought would be great BUT if you use thumbprint you also have to use a 4 digit pin.
So using thumbprint means you have to hit the side ON button, then thumb print, then enter a 4 digit pin. Bugger that.
So now I'm back to just the side on off button and quick swipe.
Seems silly.
In other news the AIRDROID APP for transferring files from PC etc works well so far.

The largest carrier in Canada says iPhone 8 sales are looking to be disappointing. What was the reason for people to get a new one again? Besides the facial recognition unlocking?

After my upgrade to iOS 11, I swear my iPad Air 2 is not charging when I plug in the cable. I have two official Apple chargers so it can't be something bad with the cable. Sometimes when I plug it in and leave it face down it plain forgets it was charging - sort of like plugging it into a PC where it says it's connected but not charging (although I've never seen it on the iPad, it's just behaving like that). To fix it I unplug and plug it back in and it's charging again. It's happened at least once a week so I don't think it's a coincidence anymore. All Google search shows me is I need to take it into the genius bar.

I am getting an iPhone X at work. I must be the least enthused recipient of it.

I’ve avoided all the hype and news until some kid on TV started gushing. Are the new iPhones really better/worth that sort of money?

My work mobile is out of date now. There's an S version.

I just got the 6+ seems okay. Wasn't tempted by the 1000 Euro plus alternatives. One of the kids has just got the normal 6, a big difference between the two models. Well, in size.

6 had a plus? I thought that was 7. Isn't 6 at least 4 years old now?

I have no idea why my father follows Apple announcements. I hope one day he doesn't spend 1500 on a mobile when he spends most days sitting at home surrounded by his two iPads, smart watch and a laptop.

I’m thinking this Apple Watch thing might be good for my mum, who lives alone. She has already had a few health scares.

I thought Whatsapp encryption was pretty good?

I still prefer Telegram because it is not in the US, but some of the overseas friends insist on Whatsapp, which is fine with me.

Not much the Russians will get from my messages. Latest message from my sister arriving in London telling me after getting off plane after 17 hours from Singapore queue to get passport stamped was 2 hours. With usual English service tossed in free.

I’ve only had about an hour to play around with it.

I mostly use my phone for messaging friends overseas, skimming this forum, taking pics of the kids and sharing them with family and watching movies/tv shows.

For doing that stuff it is a huge improvement on my old phone. The camera is impressive, video display is great and I now have memory to store shit. Plus it’s water ”proof”.

Worth the money or worth upgrading if you have a newish phone -probably not. But I’m still impressed how far thing have come in four years.
