This Week In News That Makes You Doubt Your Committment To Humanity

"A Hollywood executive wanted Julia Roberts to portray Harriet Tubman in the leading abolitionist's biopic, the screenwriter of the new film “Harriet” said.

After studying Tubman’s life in college, about how she helped lead enslaved people to freedom on the Underground Railroad, screenwriter Gregory Allen Howard was determined to adapt her story into a feature film, he said in an interview with Focus Features, the distributor of 'Harriet.'

When he met with a studio president about the idea in 1994, his script garnered praise, Howard wrote in an essay in the Los Angeles Times. It also received a casting suggestion.

'Let’s get Julia Roberts to play Harriet Tubman,' the executive told Howard.

Howard said the one other black person in the meeting said that would be impossible, as Julia Roberts is white."

Obviously Julia Roberts would wear blackface during the movie. Problem solved.

I did. We used to have the naughty ones sit in a chair facing the far corner of the wall. Class would go on. If we were sitting cross legged in the front listening to the teacher read a story and the child spoke we were instructed by the teacher to ignore the pleas of the naughty one. I forgot the exact phrase but it was basically if we don't acknowledge they exist then they'll tire of moaning to themselves. Obviously these schools are spoilt as they have real padded sound proof rooms. I was in a portable classroom outside the real school because of overcrowding.

i wonder about your connection to humanity sometimes.

I've just taken a glance at that chaps Twitter account ''Ask me about Socialism.''

Well, over here in Europe, we've had real experience of socialism and it ain't very nice. In fact we don't need some American to lecture us on the virtues, because there ain't any. Another plonker in the Corbyn mode.
You have things we dont. Youre doing better. As a society youre doing better.

The irony of when a Nobel Peace Prize winner and previously incarcerated activist defends the country against genocide committed whilst she is in power to a UN organisation that was always pressing Burma to free her.

Oh wait - switch the gender and country and we almost have Mugabe.

"Tesco has suspended production of charity Christmas cards at a factory in China after a six-year-old girl found a message from workers inside one. In block capitals, it said: 'We are foreign prisoners in Shanghai Qingpu prison China. Forced to work against our will. Please help us and notify human rights organisation.'"

Now there's no use for these prisoners so I'm sure the government will just sentence them all to death now.

Looks like its a crime to offer to pay? Good Ole USA

Fwiffo - careful next time you buy one of your "friends" a drink

This lady tries to act entitled like the elites, but when common folk exert authority she goes to jelly and starts pleading. A 1 minute video.

"The pig, which according to local reports weighed 75kg (165 lbs), is seen being pushed off the tower with a purple cape tied around its shoulders. In one video of the incident, what sound like pig squeals can be heard.

What happens to the pig afterwards is not shown, though many local media reports say it was eventually sent to a slaughterhouse."

Simple job for the slaughterhouse. It died of fright on its way down.

This is the second largest economy whose people have aspirations to depose the Americans from the mantle of moral and economical leadership.

And people wonder how humanity is capable of herding a bunch of women into endless prostitution for profit.

The BBC plants a seed straight out of Logan's Run or Mao's Cultural Revolution, what to do with useless old people:

Did you actually read the article, or did you simply assume that it would have a conclusion that you disliked because it was by the Beeb?

The article is in favour of continuing to pay pensions, and argues against the idea that people should be kept around merely because of their value and killed off when they cease to have value.

The article concluded:

Today's societies are rich and sedentary by comparison - we can afford the rising cost of pensions, if we choose.

...

We might hope we're long past the days when levels of respect for old people unconsciously tracked some balance of costs and benefits. Still, if we believe a dignified old age is a right, perhaps we should be saying that, as clearly and as often as possible.

you shouldn't ask questions you already know the answer to

Actually, as a lawyer, those are *precisely* the sort of questions you should ask (at least when appearing in court!). 😋

But yes, I perfectly understand what you meant.

I'm reading the subtext, not the supposed message. The Beeb knows exactly the game being played, they're introducing a position that old people don't have use. Which in Brit culture was always a given that the value in OAP's was self-evident and due respect was to be shown. They're planting seeds that's all.

So on the one hand, you don't like socialism and you think that the BBC is socialist. A socialist system is, in general, precisely one that *does* take care of people who cannot take care of themselves, such as the elderly. Of course, it does this by taking money away from other people and businesses and redistributing it, which is something that some people vehemently dislike about it.

On the other hand, you think that the BBC is softening people up for the idea of culling older people.

So which is it? Is the BBC socialist and thus supports left-leaning policies that include a strong welfare state, as the article actually indicates? Or does the BBC secretly support some sort of dystopia in which we cull those who are unproductive and although it actually argues against such a thing in the article, it is cunningly introducing such an idea as a subtext?

Socialist systems have been shown consistently to not take care of anyone, including the elderly.

The generous welfare states of northern Europe were founded on capitalism.

The elderly who have paid 50-70%+ of earned income in taxes on wages and VAT for 40 plus years have every right to expect a pension from the state and not be treated as an inconvenient burden or someone who has outlived their usefulness and exist on handouts. They've contributed and paid their fair share.

And this is the problem the liberal democracies have, as we are now seeing played out in France, how to collapse the welfare states when its not like Singapore, when individuals have seriously paid in the system that you're now taking away because you've pissed all the money against the wall.

I was actually joking about socialism, as the BBC is not socialist and neither is virtually anyone in western Europe anymore.

At the most, they're democratic socialists who simply believe in a strong safety net and national health systems.

The odd thing is that the BBC is, and will, vehemently argue against any move to get rid of state pensions and yet you've somehow convinced yourself that a) everyone in the BBC is left-wing but b) they're secretly in cahoots with a conservative government effort to cut pensions.

Do you realise the inherent contradiction in those two views? How do you reconcile those contradictions?

i agree! and so does everyone else reading this.

the welfare state is collapsing precisely because of capitalism and a capitalist economy. tax dodging and economic downturns are part and parcel of the capitalist system.

There's this constant theme here in western Europe where officialdom cover up twisted fuck for the sake of being politically or culturally sensitive. What is it with these people:

''Another example they gave involved the immigration and naturalization service IND. According to them, "explicit videos of torture" and child pornography were found on the phones of asylum seekers who applied for residence in the Netherlands. In some cases, this information was ignored because problems at the IND were politically sensitive. "There may have been terrorists transferred to an asylum center," one source said to the newspaper. "That was not allowed to appear in the report.''
